It’s a big cleaning that is preparing at the Nets, with the future departure of Kevin Durant obviously, but also that of Kyrie Irving. We will have to be patient, since the negotiations are at a standstill. However, another player could join them soon: Ben Simmons, who is arousing some interest on the Eastern side.
After a few seasons of fighting for the title, the Nets are preparing for a new stage. Kevin Durant asked to leave the ship, while Kyrie Irving should follow the same path, he who is far from untouchable in the Big Apple after his performances. The exchanges will take place no matter what, it remains to be seen when, and to what destination. This is where it gets complicated, since the talks are at a standstill according to some sources.
For KD, it will not surprise anyone, but the consideration requested by Brooklyn is simply too high. Rudy Gobert’s trade motivated executives to raise the price, so no one in the league wants to sign the star on those terms. Kyrie? Well the front office wants to temporize, and wait for the future destination of his teammate. Result, a huge status quo everywhere in this league.
Towards a total upheaval at the Nets?
Yes, it will take some patience in Brooklyn, especially since Durant’s trade could take months or more if no one decides to give in. However, teams could turn to another player to strengthen themselves according to the Heavy site: Ben Simmons. Although the player hasn’t played for a long time now, the Raptors have an interest in the Aussie.
No concrete information yet, but Toronto could make an offer soon, centered around OG Anunoby:
Toronto has had recent interest in Ben Simmons, with a package that could have been built around OG Anunoby. But the Raptors aren’t ready to trade Scottie Barnes, Fred VanVleet or even Pascal Siakam. The negotiations therefore promise to be complicated, especially for Brooklyn.
That’s not to say a trade is impossible, but the Raptors will have to make some effort if they want to lure Simmons, who looks like a plan B. Toronto is known to be lurking around the Durant soap opera, but Brooklyn’s asking price is annoying :
The Raptors can still attempt an offense with Anunoby, Khem Birch and two other young players, like Malachi Flynn and Precious Achiuwa, with a few more early rounds. This may be the best way to convince the Nets.
Ben Simmons traded? Interest exists from the Raptors, who would not be against a playmaker on the floor, so someone who can defend. It remains to be seen whether the Nets are open to this idea, and before the possible departure of Kevin Durant this summer.
