Tintin in the land of the afterlife – Companies

Fanny and Nick Rodwell are deploying a new structure to ensure, after their death, optimal management of the rights derived from the work of Hergé.

Bearing the name of a famous castle in the adventures of Tintin, the company Moulinsart manages the exploitation of the rights of the work of Hergé for more than 30 years. Its managing director is none other than Nick Rodwell who, in 1993, married Fanny Vlaminck, the Belgian cartoonist’s second wife and his only beneficiary since the latter’s death. Scrupulously watching over the image of Tintin, Nick and Fanny Rodwell had no children and it is the whole question of the inheritance and the management of Hergé’s work that has arisen for a few years. This problem has become all the more pressing since Fanny Rodwell today suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and her husband is regularly the target of speculation from his detractors. To break any rumor of the sale of Hergé’s rights to a foreign group, the Rodwell spouses have just deployed a new structure in order to perpetuate the universe of Tintin and to better manage the work of the designer. If the name and legal status of this umbrella organization are not yet known, there is no doubt that this structure will be non-profit, without however being an ASBL. When contacted, Nick Rodwell did not wish to answer our questions and referred us to Robert Vangénéberg, administrator of Moulinsart and architect of this new organization. “We are actually working on the implementation of a lasting solution for the continued exploitation of Hergé’s work, confirms the person concerned. For the moment, I cannot tell you more, if not is that this new organization will remain in Belgium and will redraw the landscape of today’s societies.” According to our information, this unique structure will indeed be a public utility foundation which will most certainly bear the name of the designer. This new “Hergé Foundation” will be divided into two poles: one dedicated to B to B with the company Moulinsart which will be renamed Tintin Imaginatio to precisely bring back the name of Tintin in the activities of management of rights and commercial exploitation; the other will be devoted to B to C with the company La Croix de l’Aigle, which already administers the Hergé Museum and will soon take over the activities of the Tintin shops.
