Multiplying anti-gay or transphobic initiatives in many states, Republican conservatives have found a new battleground: attacking drag shows in the name of protecting minors.
Haro on drag. Obviously not satisfied by the proliferation of LGBTphobic laws or bills in many States that it leads, the American conservative right has found a new target: drag queens. During a press conference given on Wednesday June 8, the Republican governor of Florida (southeast of the United States), Ron DeSantis, proposed that the child protective services investigate the parents who take their children at drag shows, reports NBC news.

“There seems to be a concerted effort to increasingly expose children to things that are not age-appropriate”said Ron DeSantis, referring to drag shows. “It’s totally inappropriate [et] it’s not something kids should be exposed to.”hammered the man who recently passed his “Don’t Say Gay” law which will censor, from July, questions of gender identity and sexual orientation in Florida schools.
Amalgam between drag show and striptease
The drag show controversy has been fueled by conservatives across the Atlantic since a video was released on social media on June 4 showing children attending a drag queen show at an event called “Drag the Kids to Pride Drag Show”, organized in Dallas (Texas). “The events of the past weekend have been horrific and show a disturbing trend in which evil adults are obsessed with the sexualization of young children”reacted in particular Bryan Slaton, Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives, announcing the imminent filing of a bill banning drag shows for minors.
In the ranks of the Grand Old Party, the idea of banning drag shows quickly gained ground. In L’Georgia State House Member Marjorie Taylor Greene said on Twitter that“it should be illegal to take children to drag queen shows and strip clubs”showing a crass ignorance of the difference between the two.
In response to these attacks, Marti, a famous American drag queen, denounced on Twitter the instrumentalization of drag shows in order to divert the gaze of public opinion from the real problems. “To distract you from the mass shootings and guns, the GOP has decided to launch attacks on drag performers, attacks on trans people.” But, adds the artist, “queer people are resilient, we won’t back down, we won’t be erased”. Resistance is what the LGBTQI+ community has needed lately to resist the incessant conservative offensives…
