Umbrella Academy on Netflix: how Vanya (Elliot Page) changed gender – News Séries

Elliot Page is back in season 3 of Netflix’s “Umbrella Academy” as number 7. After the actor’s transgender coming out, his character is experiencing a natural and touching evolution. Explanations.

It’s in a textposted on his Instagram account on December 1, 2020, that Elliot Page broke the news: “I wanted to tell you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot.” Shared by millions of characters, the message goes around the world and opens a whole new chapter for the actor. A few months later, in March 2021, he made Featured from the prestigious TIME magazine with this quote: “I am completely who I am.”

In front of the camera since the age of 10, the interpreter continues his long career. On Netflix, he is one of the main stars of the superhero series Umbrella Academy. Following this coming-out, the character must logically evolve.

This transition appears from episode 2. Until then, Number 7 is still called Vanya. While the character is in the Obsidian Hotel, he gets his hands on a book which informs him that the Hargreeves children are called The Kennedy Six and that they are framed for the assassination of President Kennedy. Turning the pages, Number 7 also discovers that Sissy Cooper (Marin Ireland), his former girlfriend present in season 2, died on October 1, 1989 under a false identity.

Reminiscing about the past, the Academy’s most powerful member heads to a barber shop. Sissy’s voice echoes in her head: “We don’t notice the box we’re trapped in until someone frees us..” Number 7 comes in and sits on the chair.

He reappears, one sequence later, facing three of the family members who can only notice his new appearance. “My name is Viktor”, he rectifies after being called by his old first name. “Who is Viktor?”, asks Number 2 (Justin H. Min). “It’s me. I have always been Victor. Is this a problem for anyone?”, he retorts. The characters pay little heed to this announcement. After a few seconds, the conversation starts up again, as if nothing had happened.

In another scene, Viktor confides in Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman): “I hated mirrors. I thought everyone felt bad about themselves.” Number 3 then asks him: “What do you see now?Viktor simply replies: “Me.

Obligatory passage to follow the life of Elliot Page, this transition is approached with great simplicity and gentleness, as if to better underline that there is no major subject there. This third season ofUmbrella Academy marks the actor’s first on-screen appearance after coming out.
