Au revoir, et merci, Romain Hamouma !

On July 19, 2012, Romain Hamouma, a young striker from SM Caen, joined ASSE. The 25-year-old then slips in his first words from Stéphanois: “JI absolutely wanted to come to Saint-Étienne. It was the club I had chosen.” It will remain his for a decade. Because arrived on tiptoe, Romain Hamouma quickly made a place for himself in hearts. For his first in the Green jersey in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, the native of Montbéliard only needs ten short minutes to raise the Cauldron. This first goal against Lille one evening in August 2012 calls for many others. Two weeks later, bis repetita, he finds the net, this time against Brest. Ideally started, this first exercise as a Stéphanois ends in the most beautiful way. At the Stade de France, he played the last quarter of an hour of a 2013 Coupe de la Ligue final that has gone down in ASSE history.

The following season is already one of fulfillment for the winger. Under Christophe Galtier, he scored nine league goals. ASSE achieved one of the finest results of its modern era that year, finishing fourth, two small units from the podium. A performance that allows him, in 2014, to taste Europe for the first time in his career. In a Cauldron of very great evenings, he will be a decisive passer when receiving Inter Milan in the fall. Decisive, it will be again during the following campaign. Scorer against Dnipro, in the first leg and return, he allowed ASSE to extricate itself from the group stage for the first time since 2008-2009.

At the end of the contract in the summer of 2015, Romain Hamouma chose to see further in Green. Number 21 commits for three more years. They are marked, like the previous ones, by achievements of anthology, like the four registered during Derby, in the Cauldron or in rival lands. Among his most beautiful inspirations, many will remember this rolled against Évian-Thonon-Gaillard, this slalom against Monaco or even this hat-trick achieved against Lille at the end of a stunning 2017-2018 exercise. But again, the story is not over.

Time has flown but the “RH21” jersey remains green in the summer of 2018. This time, it is under the orders of Jean-Louis Gasset that the striker flourishes. Admittedly, he will sign fewer achievements than usual, but among them, one of the most symbolic: that of the 3-0 against Nice, synonymous with a European ticket. And if the following seasons are unfortunately more complicated on a collective level, he started in the final at the Stade de France, seven years later and this time in the Coupe de France, against Paris. Deprived of Peuple Vert this evening of 2020, he finds his audience a few weeks later. Against Lorient, he offered himself a double. He will score six goals during this exercise, two more this year, bringing his record to 62 achievements in Green and making him the 16th top scorer in the great history of AS Saint-Étienne, overtaking Johnny Rep or Dominique Rocheteau .

After ten seasons, 321 matches played, 62 goals scored and 48 assists, Romain Hamouma is leaving AS Saint-Étienne. The club wishes good continuation to the one who will remain Green for life.
