Five months before the start of the World Cup, one of the participating nations sees its presence in Qatar called into question.
The World Cup line-up is now known. Costa Rica, thanks to its victory against New Zealand, and Australia, winner of the United Arab Emirates and Peru, have indeed completed the table. A threat nevertheless hovers over one of the 32 qualified, who could indeed quickly find themselves in the sights of Fifa.
Tunisia can imagine the worst
And according to the local press, Tunisia, placed in the group of France during the draw for the group stage, can imagine the worst. Consequence of the interference of the Ministry of Sports in the affairs of the Tunisian Federation. The government has indeed explicitly threatened the Federation with dissolution, deeming its decisions too hasty concerning suspicions of corruption during the play-off matches for the maintenance in the first division.
Kenya and Zimbabwe suspended for “political interference”
Such a dissolution would constitute political interference for which FIFA could exact a heavy price. At least if we refer to the precedents on the subject. The international body thus recently sanctioned Kenya and Zimbabwe for “political interference”which had resulted in them being excluded from qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The federations of Kenya and Zimbabwe were dissolved by their respective governments last year, leading to their suspension by FIFA in February. Kenya’s sports ministry had dissolved its football federation following the indictment of its president Nick Mwendwa on multiple counts of fraud, while the Zimbabwe association’s executive committee had been dissolved on the basis of allegations of embezzlement.
This risk of exclusion from the World Cup, however, has not escaped the Tunisian government, which could temporize before taking a radical decision.
