GP du Canada : Max Verstappen partira en pole devant Alonso et Sainz

Rain, a penalized Charles Leclerc and an injured Sergio Perez in Q2, everything was there for this qualifying session to bring something new. But Max Verstappen had no intention of giving up pole position. Clearly above the competition, the Dutchman relegated the competition to six tenths with a time of 1’21”299.

If the name of the poleman is not a surprise, that of the pilot who will start alongside him is a little more. Very comfortable in the rain, Fernando Alonso took second place. His last start from the front row of a Grand Prix was at the German Grand Prix in 2012.

Alpine proved that rain was no problem as Esteban Ocon also arrived in Q3 with a seventh place on the grid. Without Leclerc, many of whose engine parts were changed after the incident in Baku, Ferrari still managed to place a single-seater in a good position on the starting grid. Despite an alert in Q1, Carlos Sainz recovered perfectly to take third position behind his compatriot. The Monegasque will start from the penultimate row, just in front of Yuki Tsunoda.

Hamilton’s revival, Russell’s failed bet

On a wet track which reduced the rebound phenomenon suffered by his Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton achieved his best Saturday since the start of the season. Fourth, the Briton will start from the second row just behind Sainz. And will be ahead of his teammate George Russell whose bet to finish Q3 on soft tires on a drying track was not conclusive. The only driver to have taken this risk, he first lost control of his single-seater and then was unable to improve his time. And it is therefore from eighth place that he will start this Grand Prix of Canada.

The big losers this Saturday are Sergio Perez, Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel. The first sent his single-seater into the wall in Q2 and was never able to engage reverse gear to get back on track. It is therefore a thirteenth place finish for the Mexican. The other two were unable to ride their momentum of successful EL3 (second for Gasly, third for Vettel) and were eliminated in Q1.
